JUNO NOCTURNES works best when each layer has a distinct job. Begin with one slow source of weight, then add motion and melody only where the arrangement needs them.

1. Establish the space with one pad

Choose a wide pad and play a sparse chord or interval. Let the chorus and reverb define the scene before adding another instrument. Shorter notes can leave more useful negative space than a continuous wall of sound.

2. Put the drone below, not on top

Add a drone quietly under the pad and keep its harmonic center simple. A root or fifth usually creates enough low pressure without making the midrange cloudy.

3. Use a sequence as controlled movement

Bring in one pulsing sequence for a section transition or a restrained rhythmic layer. Filter it back until the motion is felt before every note is obvious.

4. Keep the melodic voice fragile

Use a lead or dusty key for a small motif rather than a dense melody. A narrow register and a few repeated notes can carry more atmosphere than a busy phrase.
